ABOUT OUR FIRM
“The best pieces of advice I ever got from him were to remember that the opposing lawyer in a lawsuit is your opponent, not your enemy, ‘so treat him with respect,’ and remember to be careful how you treat people on the way up because you never know when you might run into them on the way down. I’ve tried to follow both of those.” – David Sullivan, speaking of his father, James Sullivan.

PASSED DOWN BY OUR FOUNDERS
Core Principles Of Practice
-
The Firm Founders embedded the ethos of Respect into every aspect of our legal practice. We respect our clients by offering skilled and experienced representation for every matter. We respect our adversaries by understanding the difference between an opponent and an enemy. We know for our business clients this is critically important because an opponent in one matter may become a partner for another.
-
For more than 100 years the Founders of Cox, Zwerner, Gambill & Sullivan, LLP, built long-lasting relationships with clients and community partners. The Firm is deeply rooted here in Terre Haute, and our Attorneys greatly value our loyal clientele throughout the region and plan to remain a steady hand guiding our clients and community into the future.
-
Part of what makes the Firm able to provide the steady and consistently excellent legal counsel on which our clients and community partners rely is the collaboration of our Attorneys with each other. With more than 180 years of combined legal experience, across diverse practice areas, our Attorney’s teamwork benefit our clients with wholistic representation. We work together to ensure that our clients receive the counsel they need, to resolve their legal issues as effectively and efficiently as possible.
-
We believe that we have a responsibility to the community and the members of the Firm to serve the community through a variety of civic organizations.
In 2019, the Attorneys in our firm volunteered approximately 225 hours of Attorney time to provide our steady and competent legal advice to individuals who could not afford our regular fees as well as non-profit organizations designed to improve our local community.

Our Building’s History
Cox, Zwerner, Gambill & Sullivan, LLP, is located in a historic building at 511 Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute. Originally built in 1893 as a neo-classical Corinthian Greek temple for the First National Bank of Terre Haute, it underwent a significant remodel in 1928 by Weary and Alford of Chicago, updating the facade and interior. The building, used as a bank until 1988, was acquired by the Firm in 1992. A $500,000 adaptive reuse project restored the structure, preserving its 30-foot cast plaster ceiling, central skylight, and ornate details. It now houses 18 offices and conference rooms.
